Letter from The Director • August 13, 2017

Dear Shasta Families,

We are so excited to launch the 2017-2018 school year this week! New ninth grade students will be on campus tomorrow from 8:20-3:30 and all Shasta students will return to school on Tuesday, August 15th. Classes start promptly at 8:20 so please ensure all students are present on-time.

We also want to take a minute to thank all of the parents and students who came out to make our beautification day such a success. Over a hundred members of our community helped clean and set-up the campus and participated in registration activities. Thank you so much for your support!

Please read below for some important updates about the start of our year and our annual camping trip. We look forward to a great year!

Best,

Updates for the 2017-2018 school year!

We are excited to share some updates for the 2017-2018 school year:

New team members:

Please join me in welcoming the following new team members to Summit Shasta: Jacqueline Bialostozky (Spanish 1, Spanish 2), Liz Casey (10th Grade English), Laura Friday (9th Grade English), Patricia Henriquez (Math I), Gene Lee (Biology), Michael Lim (Math II, AP Statistics), Mike Maita (AP Environmental Science), Anu Pattabiraman (Math III), and Sergio Suarez (Operations Manager). We are thrilled for you to get to know them this year!

2017-2018 Athletic Season:

The 2017-2018 athletic season has already started. This year, Summit Shasta Varsity teams will participate in the PSAL (Private School Athletic League) and we will have the opportunity to host our first home games and events. Volleyball practice started last week and there is a cross-country meeting for all interested athletes Tuesday afternoon immediately after school. Go Black Bears!

Mentor Time:

This school year, students will spend more time with their mentor and mentor groups. Mentors will continue to give each student a 1:1 check-in weekly. In addition, each week, mentor groups will have specific time Friday mornings to support students in their work to live inspired, purposeful lives. During this time, students will navigate their identity, build relationships with all members of their community, and have discussions to find their place in the world.

Enhancements to Spanish 1:

This year we are excited to offer Spanish 1 to more students than ever before. Spanish teachers Michelle Gross and Jacqueline Bialostozky will utilize Rosetta Stone to offer Spanish 1 students a personalized, immersive Spanish experience. Rosetta Stone Level 1 is now a UC-approved course that will be listed on student transcripts and is recognized by colleges and universities across the country. We are excited to now be able to offer a 4-year Spanish pathway to all Shasta students.

Enhancements to Spanish 2-4:

This year, all students in Spanish 2, Spanish 3 and AP Spanish will be assessed using a new rubric for world languages. This new grading system allows students to receive more targeted feedback on their language development and better support second language acquisition. Students will learn more about this grading system from their Spanish teachers in the coming weeks.

Save the Date: Back to School Night!

Summit Shasta’s annual Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, August 29th from 7:00-8:30. All families are highly encouraged to attend! At the event, parents will have an opportunity to meet their student’s teachers and mentors and hear exciting updates for the 2017-2018 school year.

2017-2018 CAMPING TRIP

The Summit Shasta camping trip is less than two weeks away! Thank you so much to the 35 parents that have already volunteered to drive. Each year, we need approximately 90 parents to support with transporting all students to the camping trip. As a result, we need your help!! If you are able to drive (even if only one day!), please complete this form as soon as possible!!!

COLLEGE CORNER

On Tuesday, August 29th, we are hosting our first College Night of the year. This event, titled Pathways to College, is highly recommend for all 9-11th grade families. At the event, families will receive an overview of how Summit Shasta supports students in the college process through each year at Summit Shasta. Back to School Night starts immediately after at 7 PM. Hope to see you there!
