Dear Shasta Families,

We are so excited to continue on the positive momentum from the first week of the school year. This week culminates with one of our favorite Summit traditions- the fifth annual Summit Shasta camping trip! The camping trip allows our school a unique opportunity to build community among students and teachers, foster interests and passions across grade levels, and most importantly, have fun together!

However, in order to continue this unique tradition, we still need your help. At this point, we still need approximately 20 more drivers to continue this important tradition at our school. If we are not able to secure enough drivers, we will not be able to take the trip.

If you are able to drive (even if only one day!), please complete this form as soon as possible!!! We are looking for parent support on August 24th and August 25th. In order to drive, parents only need to submit copies of their license, registration, insurance, and driver packet. Livescan and TB testing are only needed if a parent is staying over night so if you are only planning to drive, you do not need these two things!

Here are the time commitments for each day:

Thursday, August 24th:
8:30-10:15: Drive students to Boulder Creek Campground and drop off students at the campground
10:15: Free to depart Boulder Creek and return

Friday, August 25th:
12:00 PM-12:45: Pick up students in Boulder Creek and return to drop off at Summit Shasta. Once parents drop off students at Summit Shasta, they are free to leave.

Save the Date: Back to School Night!

Summit Shasta’s annual Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, August 29th from 7:00-8:30. All families are highly encouraged to attend! At the event, parents will have an opportunity to meet their student’s teachers and mentors and hear exciting updates for the 2017-2018 school year.

Teacher Residents at Summit Shasta this Year

We are excited to share that this year we have added teacher residents to our faculty in collaboration with the Summit Learning Teacher Residency.  Similar to a medical residency, the Summit Learning Teacher Residency is a program that develops high-qualified teachers by immersing them in our school sites where they spend a full year working alongside our most experienced teachers.

The Summit Learning Teacher Residency is a one-year program accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. This is a wonderful opportunity for our schools; our teacher residents are remarkably talented individuals who are committed to our Summit community, and building their knowledge and skills as teachers. All teacher residents were part of Summit schools last year and are excited to continue their commitment to our community this year.

This year, Gemma Yob and Anwar Darkazanli will serve as teacher residents at Summit Shasta. Gemma will be working with Chelsea Watts as a teacher resident in AP Literature and Composition. Anwar will be working with Andrew McCarty as a teacher resident in Chemistry. Gemma and Anwar will co-teach with their cooperating teahers Monday through Thursday for the length of the school year, and will take on additional teaching responsibilities in some class sections in the Spring.

The Expeditions Program at Summit Shasta

The Expeditions program is looking for its last few teachers to work with our students at Summit Shasta! Do you know anyone who is excellent in their field and dynamic with students? If so, please let them know about our openings (full details, including dates and job requirements, available on our “Careers” page at www.summitps.org). Past Expeditions courses have included anything from Human Rights to Girls on the Run to Computer Science to Photography. School Pictures on Friday, September 1st

This year, school pictures will be at Summit Shasta on Friday, September 1st between 10 AM and 3 PM> Parents may order pictures online at mylifetouch.com. Please email Delvy Escobar (descobar@summitps.org) if you have any questions.


On Tuesday, August 29th, we are hosting our first College Night of the year. The event will begin at 6:15 PM. This event, titled Pathways to College, is highly recommend for all 9-11th grade families. At the event, families will receive an overview of how Summit Shasta supports students in the college process through each year at Summit Shasta. Back to School Night starts immediately after at 7 PM. Hope to see you there!
