Letter from The Director • September 24, 2017

Dear Shasta Families,

Thank you so much for joining us for PLP Meetings this week! It was wonderful to welcome all of our families on campus and we look forward to continued partnerships with you this year to support your student’s education and development.

As we head into the last week of school before Expeditions, please check-in with students on their academic progress on the Summit Learning Platform. This week, many classes will have deadlines for final projects and we want to ensure all students enter Expeditions in strong academic standing!

Support Shasta’s Charter Renewal Petition
This fall we will submit our petition to Jefferson Union High School District (JUHSD) for the renewal of Summit Shasta’s charter.  We are required to go through the charter renewal process every 5 years in order to continue operating Summit Shasta as a free public charter school.  We need strong family support in order to ensure a successful charter renewal.  Read more information on the charter renewal process HERE. Sign up to attend a JUHSD Board Meeting HERE. Thanks in advance for your support!

Shasta Teacher and Students are Published Authors!
Shasta Chemistry teacher Bradley Davey and seniors Brandon Htet and Soren Spada will have an article published in the International Journal of Scientific and Engineering Research. The article was inspired by work the three did on the Chemistry Biodiesel Project during the 2016-2017 school year. The published article, titled “Manipulation of Biodiesel Precursor Components: Maximizing Energy Density and Cost Efficiency,” will run in the September 2017 edition of the journal. We are incredibly proud of their work!

Shasta Pilots New Expeditions Course
We are excited to offer a new small Expeditions course for seniors this year called “A Seniors Guide to Life After Shasta!” One component of that course will be that students complete job shadows and interview people in our community about their work and life experiences. If you are interested in hosting a Shasta senior for a job shadow or being interviewed (or if you know someone who would be interested!), please email Katie Goddard (kgoddard@summitps.org)

Announcement for the Class of 2018
Lisa Rentel is excited to offer you a senior trip to remember forever! This 10 day trip to beautiful Costa Rica is full of fun and adventure. She would like to offer parents who are interested an information meeting to go over the details of the trip. Please click on the link and let Lisa know if you have any question. Fill out the information for integrated travelers and she can contact you directly.

Message from the Expeditions Team: Internships and Independent Study
My name is James White and I am the Manager of Independent Learning and Partnerships for Summit Public Schools. I wanted to reach out to you directly and let you know that there is still time for your student to setup an Internship or Independent Study! Internship and Independent study is a self-directed process. If students want an internship, they have to put in the work to find one (though we are happy to support). Below are task cards that students can work through to make sure they are on track to securing an Internship or Independent Study. Please review the information in the task card and support your student in finding a unique Expeditions placement or independent course that works for them.
Task Cards:
Independent Study Task Card (click here!)
Internship Task Card (click here!)
Internships and Independent Study help students to:
  • Learn professional workplace skills
  • Explore a career field and deepen knowledge in a unique area of study
  • Apply self-direction in a real-world work environment
  • Strengthen college applications
  • Build a professional network
There will be office hours on campus next week for students to attend. Please encourage your students to complete the task card and come visit during office hours for additional support. I am also more than happy to assist via email at jwhite@summitps.org.

Congratulations to our cross country team who successfully competed in their first meet this week. Two runners, Eli Merhling and Jonathan Smaw, finished in the top twenty of their division! The next meet will be this upcoming Wednesday.
Please join the Shasta Volleyball team for two home games this week. The team faces Kehillah Jewish at 4 PM on Monday, September 25 and The Nueva School at 4 PM on Thursday, September 28th. Good luck Black Bears!

Winter sports registration will open October 1st. Boys basketball will start preseason conditioning on Monday 10/26. More information on times and locations will be emailed this week.

In addition, all of our schedules, rosters & info will be hosted on MaxPreps. Our school page is:
