Letter from The Director • October 2, 2017

Dear Shasta Families,

The Expeditions Team is so excited to start off the 2017-2018 school year at Summit Shasta on Monday! There are tons of ways parents can be involved in Expeditions, from serving as a guest speaker in the Adulting 101 class, to judging business pitches in the entrepreneurship class, to demonstrating a special technique in the cooking class. Check out the course list here!

We also want to introduce you to Lucretia Witte (lwitte@summitps.org), Executive Director of Expeditions. Lucretia will be on-campus each day of Expeditions and is coordinating the program at Summit Shasta this year. Lucretia grew up on the east coast. She has always been passionate about the great outdoors but after working as a camp counselor at a ranch camp in Wyoming, she began to see how children could grow personally from going out of their comfort zone. After graduating from college, she taught English for several years in Connecticut and New York.  Hoping to work in an environment where children could grow personally and ethically as well as academically, eventually she found her way to a mountain school in Switzerland, where she taught 10th grade English in the morning and climbing/hiking in the afternoon. She also did a Fulbright in Greece where she taught high school English and Math and researched the public education system as a tool for economic recovery.  Ms. Witte graduated from Dartmouth College and was a Pablo Eisenberg Fellow for Public Service at Georgetown, where she earned her Masters in Public Policy. We are excited to have Lucretia on campus!

During Expeditions, the Shasta school day will remain on a normal schedule, running from 8:20 AM-3:30 PM. Students will have Personalized Learning Time with their mentor every afternoon from 2:20 PM-3:30 PM. Office hours will also be available to all students on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 PM- 5:30 PM.

Support Shasta’s Charter Renewal Petition
This fall we will submit our petition to Jefferson Union High School District (JUHSD) for the renewal of Summit Shasta’s charter.  We are required to go through the charter renewal process every 5 years in order to continue operating Summit Shasta as a free public charter school.  We need strong family support in order to ensure a successful charter renewal.  Read more information on the charter renewal process HERE. Sign up to attend a JUHSD Board Meeting HERE. Thanks in advance for your support!

Shasta Pilots New Expeditions Course
We are excited to offer a new small Expeditions course for seniors this year called “A Seniors Guide to Life After Shasta!” One component of that course will be that students complete job shadows and interview people in our community about their work and life experiences. If you are interested in hosting a Shasta senior for a job shadow or being interviewed (or if you know someone who would be interested!), please email Katie Goddard (kgoddard@summitps.org)

Announcement for the Class of 2018
Lisa Rentel is excited to offer you a senior trip to remember forever! This 10 day trip to beautiful Costa Rica is full of fun and adventure. She would like to offer parents who are interested an information meeting to go over the details of the trip. Please click on the link and let Lisa know if you have any question. Fill out the information for integrated travelers and she can contact you directly.

Cross country and volleyball are in full swing and we continue to be impressed with our Black Bear student athletes! For schedules, rosters, and information on the season, please click here!

Winter sports registration will open October 1st. Boys basketball will start preseason conditioning on Monday 10/26. More information on times and locations will be emailed this week.

If you have additional questions about Shasta athletics, please reach out to Athletic Director Mike Lofberg at mlofberg@summitps.org

Shasta Seniors Participate in Posse Interviews
On Tuesday, September 26th, a group of nominated Shasta seniors participated in interviews for the Posse Foundation. Using a rigorous selection process, Posse awards four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships from Posse’s partner institutions of higher education. We are incredibly proud of these seniors and wish them the best of luck in the selection process!
